If you’re looking at laboratory solutions, you might have noticed two similar products: bacteriostatic water and sterile water.
They look the same. They’re both clear liquids. But they’re not the same. Here’s what you need to know.
What Is Sterile Water?
Sterile water is water that has been sterilized to remove microorganisms and contaminants. It’s used in laboratory and research applications where sterility is required. However, it does not contain any preservative or antibacterial agent, so it is supplied only in single-dose containers and should be discarded after a single use.
What Is Bacteriostatic Water?
Bacteriostatic water is also sterile, but it contains 0.9% (9 mg/mL) benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. This preservative helps limit microbial growth during normal handling. It allows the vial to be used for multiple withdrawals over time, as long as proper aseptic technique is followed.
